Prof Charles Mbohwa – Faculty Advisor

About me
Prof Mbohwa serves as Vice-Dean: Postgraduate Studies, Research and Innovation in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). As an established researcher in the field of sustainability engineering and energy, Prof Mbohwa’s specializations include sustainable engineering, energy systems, Life-Cycle Assessments (LCA’s) and bio-energy/fuel feasibility and sustainability with general research interests in renewable energies and sustainability issues.
Prof Mbohwa’s current research in sustainability engineering includes: Social and climate change comparison of biodiesel life cycle impacts in Brazil and South Africa; Life Cycle Assessment and Comparisons of Rail and Road Freight Transportation in China and South Africa; The Potential, Energy and Environmental Impacts of Bioenergy in the Sugar Industry in South Africa; and the Economic, Energy and Environmental Evaluations of Biomass-based Fuel Ethanol based on Life Cycle Assessment.
He is a co-author of the second chapter of the United Nation’s Environmental Programme’s (UNEP) Global Guidance Principles for Life Cycle Assessment Databases: A Basis for Greener Processes and Products 2011 (To access the document, click here ).
In addition, he is Project Leader for the Development of the Climate Change Response Strategy and Action Plan for the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development: Use of indigenous knowledge.
Professor Mbohwa has presented at numerous conferences and published more than 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, 6 book chapters and one book. Upon graduating with his B.Sc. Honors in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Zimbabwe in 1986, he was employed as a mechanical engineer by the National Railways of Zimbabwe. To date, besides his tenure as the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, he has supervised more than 15 PhD and more than 40 Master’s students from South Africa, the African continent, and for the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis in Austria. He collaborates with many international partners including Professor Kaltschmitt at the Technical University of Hamburg in Germany and Professor Valerie Thomas at the Georgia Institute of Technology USA.​

About me
Currently a lecturer at Department of Transport and Supply Chain, Sebonkile holds a Master’s Degree in Operations Management. The title of her Dissertation: Improving the organisational effectiveness of cooperative enterprises in the Limpopo province of South Africa. She published several papers based on occupational health and safety, cooperative enterprises, enterprise development and organisational development. Sebonkile students are also currently involved in different projects with communities.

Mr Michael Sizwe Mkwanazi
Job Title and Responsibilities
About me
Sizwe Mkwanazi is currently a Junior-Assistant Lecturer at the University of Johannesburg and a Co-faculty Advisor for Enactus. He obtained the Master of Technology Degree in Operations Management in the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment with distinction. He had been involved in community development through various initiatives. Among those initiatives he is the founding president of the Youth For Action Rural Youth Development Foundation in 2011 and working on Community Service Learning with Co-operatives in Soweto under Enactus. He has published conference papers on the theme of Co-operatives operational performance and entrepreneurship.
In his role as a Junior-Assistant Lecturer he demonstrated the interest to have more educated young people participating in community development as he introduced students from the Accounting Department to the Enactus community development model and also launched sewing co-operatives development programme.
In future, he hopes to work with the International Cooperatives Alliance in promotion of production and community based cooperatives globally. He was awarded the prestigious Mandela Rhodes Scholarship in 2015 towards his MTech. Degree studies and in 2016 December, he was elected as a 2017 Rhodes Scholar, which is a scholarship that gives him an opportunity to study in Oxford his qualification of choice. He has a National Diploma in Small Business Management, Bachelor of Technology Degree in Management Services and a Post Graduate Diploma in Management (NWU). He is also a recipient of the Gert Sibande District Municipality's Mayoral Youth Award.

Mr Sambil Charles Mukwakungu

Facilitator of Operations Management at undergraduate level as well as industry representative through short learning programmes.
About me
Sambil has been working at the University of Johannesburg since 2009, where has been lecturing Operations Management to undergraduate students, as well as Quality Management for Entrepreneurs to business entrepreneurs as part of business empowerment programmes through the University of Johannesburg’s Centre for Small Business Development (UJ CSBD).
He has participated in various programme development at undergraduate as well as post-graduate levels. His research interest is multidisciplinary, but mostly revolves around “LEAN OPERATIONS” in the service environment.
In terms of research work, I have on-going research projects: (1) City of Johannesburg community clinics attempting to improve the quality of services – a collaboration with undergraduate students. And (2) international collaboration with Professor Teresia Diana Lewe Van Aduard De Macedo-Soares from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro Rio de Janeiro, Brazil looking into the revitalisation of the South African poultry industry.

About me
A well presented, self-motivated and confident academic lecturer and researcher with extensive knowledge of lecturing and assessing students, Bupe has acquired experiences in managing and supervising student projects in the areas of waste management, productivity improvement, maintenance management as well as supply-chain management. She is currently pursuing her Doctoral studies in the School of Engineering Management at the University of Johannesburg and focusing on Reverse Logistics of Plastic Solid Waste for Sustainable Solid Waste Management.
Bupe has worked in the Department of Manufacturing and Engineering at Harare Institute of Technology in Zimbabwe where she lectured the following courses: Metal Forming and Plastic Engineering; Material Engineering; Material Removal Processes and Maintenance and Reliability Systems. Bupe has also worked in the in the Department of Operations and Supply-Chain Management at the Copperbelt University in Zambia where she lectured the following courses: Integrated Production Systems; Manufacturing Technologies; Industrial Marketing; Production and Operations Management and Research Methods. While working for these institutions, she managed to collaborate with other academicians in writing and presenting conference papers and research articles. Bupe has presented papers on Solid waste management, reverse logistics, maintenance management and engineering, productivity improvement.
